Aquatic Therapy

Aquatic-Therapy Aquatic therapy or pool therapy consists of an exercise program that is performed in the water. Aquatic therapy uses the physical properties of water such as buoyancy, viscosity, and hydrostatic pressure to assist patient healing. Aqua Therapy is most beneficial to patients who are pre- and post-surgery, post-trauma, and those who suffer from arthritis. This type of therapy is also beneficial for weight loss and strength training in able-bodied people. A warm water pool makes exercises less painful to perform.

Aquatic-Therapy2 The properties of water are useful in many different aspects. The buoyancy reduces any effects of gravity on the body therefore it helps to decrease force or weight bearing stresses on the injured joints that a patient experiences on land. The viscosity provides resistance, which aids in strength training without using any weights. Hydrostatic pressure assists to decrease swelling and improve joint position awareness that will increase proprioception. Hydrostatic pressure also decreases joint and soft tissue swelling.
